The Man Who Invented Christmas

I've been to the cinema to see the utterly wonderful film 'The Man Who Invented Christmas', and am in Victorian mode (even more so after finishing the Christmas decorating the night before too). I recommend this film to everyone, a very fine story with excellent acting and such lavishly splendid sets and costumes, it was a treasure to watch and I didn't want it to end, it's beautiful. It is about Charles Dickens writing 'A Christmas Carol', with the fantastical device of each character coming to life as he creates them and gives them a name. It has happy bits, sad bits, funny bits, it's touching and fascinating and is a visual feast. Give yourself a treat and make sure to see it before Christmas, you will be so glad you did. It will make you want to don a paisley dressing gown and settle down by a crackling fire with an enormous Victorian novel and a hot mulled drink...

  1. Recently seen a clip for this and wondered if it was worth seeing ~ Visually it looked good, but am so often disappointed by most films these days~ they promise a lot, and in terms of cinematography can be lovely but rarely deliver when it comes to the script and treatment especially when it comes to attempting to recreate books and history~ From your enthusiastic response it does seem like it would be a treat to to see it at the cinema . Thank you for the review!

    1. You are welcome, it is a lovely and sumptuous film, and I won't even tell how long it's been since I've been to the cinema because I am so picky and don't like most new films and am afraid of being stuck having to sit through bad films (and I don't like modern settings). The clips of it are not misleading, it's even better than the glimpse you see in the clips. I love it, would gladly watch it over and over, and intend to get the DVD!

  2. Well Lori, I think that sounds like a truly excellent recommendation and judging by how much we share in our mutual taste in books, other films, and music I feel certain I will end up feeling the same about it as you. It would be really lovely to finally after so many years actually love a Christmas themed film again. I look forward to seeing it and if I do get the chance will let you know what I thought of it. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on it.
